Well I finally got back to the time honoured tradition of genealogy.
Today's search starts with Henry William HUNT immigrating to Sydney Australia in 1848. This was not an uncommon occurrence and, just my luck, he is a free settler and not a convict. I know what happens to him after this date. He gets married, has a dozen or so kids, and runs a respectable Inn at Mudgee. What I'm looking for is where in the world he came from.
According to a source whom I've long forgotten (probably First Families or something), Henry was born on 11 October 1829 in the little village of East Quantoxhead in Somerset. Naturally, this pretty little village is not on the IGI, so the normal rules do not apply.
Being stuck in Australia, my only knowledge of Somerset comes from a brief visit to Bath and Frome on a whirlwind tour of the UK. To fix this I dust of the trusty gazette at genuki and find that East Quantoxhead is located near West Quantoxhead (who'da thunk?) and several other quaint English villages noones ever heard of.
Google to the Rescue!!!!
I found the site on East Quantoxhead, which is very lovely, has a lot of historical information, and a link to the parishes of West Somerset.
This site is run by a Martin Southwood, and he has been so delightful in transcribing all these little churches thus neglected by the IGI.
So now I know this little tiny bit more about my family.
Henry HUNT was the 5th son of Joseph and Charlotte HUNT. They married in 1815 and had many other children from 1816 through to 1835 (and quite possibly after). Charlotte was the daughter of William and Mary CREECH and died in 1845 at the age of 51. I'm sure they would be so proud that the names they chose for their children were recycled in the subsequent generations until the mid-20th century when someoen decided to be original.
Joseph is a little harder to track. The marriage record states that he resided in Old Cleeve. The closest is a Joseph HUNT born in East Quantoxhead 6 Feb 1779 to Joseph and Hannah HUNT. This would make Joseph 36 and Charlotte 21 years when they married. I've no proof, of course, as there are no detailed birth certificates that require you to write a life story for each child, but it does seem plausible.
