Have you ever volunteered for something? If so, what?
I volunteer quite a bit actually! Not as much as I's like - I have to earn a living too!
My major effort is as a Joey Scout leader. In other words I entertain 7 year olds for 1 hour a week and get them interested in Scouting. I also get an excellent excuse to do fun science experiments and craft activities...
I suppose the most interesting thing I volunteered for was the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The volunteer applications closed about a year before the games and you could nominate what areas you wanted to work in. I nominated as a help desk operator as I'd had experience in that area. Unfortunately, I never made it to the Olympics - not even as a spectator. My son was born less than 2 weeks before they started and I had my hands full!!
Maybe next time they are in Australia?
Show us something that rocks.
Back at Joeys again!
TERM THEME: Nature
NIGHT THEME: Animals
PARADE
WELCOME & INTRODUCTION
3 new Joeys tonight, so asked each of the kids their name and what they did on the holidays.
OUTDOOR GAMES
Cat and Mouse
Octopus
'Hop' Race - 'hopped' to the fence and back. The joeys collapsed in a heap at the end!
CRAFT
Bumblebee mobiles
These actually went better than I thought! But they took a bit of time to do.
Term Theme: Festivals and Celebrations
Weekly Theme: Thanksgiving
Explain briefly the American holiday of Thanksgiving, and that although we do not celebrate it, they also have things they are thankful for. Go around the circle and get the Joeys to say what each of them is thankful for.
GAME: Sticky Popcorn
CRAFT: TurkeysAll the Joeys are pieces of popcorn in a frying pan. They all have their eyes closed (hopefully).
The leader picks one of the joeys to become sticky
The leader then 'turns on the stove' and all the joeys start jumping around as if they were being cooked.
The 'sticky popcorn' also jumps around and 'sticks' to another piece of popcorn.
This continues until all the popcorn is stuck together
Note - I snavelled this off Kabose.com
Body: One and a half toilet rolls. Staple together
Feathers: On coloured paper, draw around the joey's hand and cut out. Get them to decorate if they want. Stick plam of hand to base of body.
Eyes, Beak, Gobble and Feet: Cut shapes out of paper. I used foam for these, which I cut out at the table with them to save time.
GAME: Octopus
Note - after being 33C today, the change came through, so we all went outside.
One or two Joeys are the octopus (octopii??) in the middle.
Other Joeys need to run from one side of the ocean to the other without getting caught.
ACTIVITY: IceblocksToday's variation for the theme was turkeys and corn. (We are not very imaginative thinking these things up at the last minute!!)
ACTIVITY: Memory GameIceblocks + Joeys = Quiet time
PARADE & HOMEA tray of items was placed on the floor and left for the joeys to memorise.
In turn, each joey is blindfolded. An item is taken away and they have to guess which one.
THEME: Mother's Day
PARADE & FLAG
GAME: Mum's Revenge
This is a relay game where the first person in the team ('Mum') runs to the other end of the room and throws a neat pile of clothes all over the floor. The next person ('Child') then has to pick them up and stack them neatly again. The winning team is the one who gets through all their team members first.
ACTIVITY: Tea Time
Joeys serve tea, coffee and biscuits to their Mum's.
CRAFT: Money boxes
Requirements - small tube chip containers (like Pringles); strip of paper long enough to go around the container; sticky tape; textas, pencils & crayons.
Instructions - 1. Cut a slit in the plastic cover large enough to fit a coin. 2. Decorate the strip of paper with whatever they like. 3. Wrap the paper around the tube and sticky tape together.
GAME: Poison Ball
GAME: Know Your Joey
Get Joeys to answer 6 easy questions (like 'What is your favourite food). These are all written down on cards and given back to the leaders.
PARADE & CLOSE
GAME: Know Your Joey (Part 2)
Read out the joey's responses to the questions. Each Mum then has to recognise and 'claim' their joey. Then they get to take them home!
